Fluorine-based Tape for Difficult-to-Bond Surfaces FA/FB Series (Under development)

Primer-free adhesive tape with adhesion to fluorine resin

Utilizing a specially developed adhesive derived from natural adhesion mechanisms, this series of high-performance tapes adheres strongly even to difficult-to-bond materials such as fluororesins and polyolefin resins. The series requires no primer or heat treatment, achieving both simplified production processes and enhanced adhesion. With their unique properties, the tapes are expected to expand into a wide range of industrial applications.

Double-coated adhesive tapes for fluoroplastics FAFB Series

Fluorine surface adhesion requiring primer treatment

Fluoroplastics are polymers that contain fluorine atoms in their molecules and have excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, electrical properties, non-adhesiveness, and self-lubricating properties. Because of such unique properties, fluoroplastics are expected to be used for water-repellent coating, non-stick coating for frying pans, and recently as a material to be used in circuit boards for high-frequency circuits such as 5G and 6G in the future. However, fluoroplastics are chemically inert, making bonding with other substances extremely difficult.
Currently, fluoroplastics, which are inert and difficult to adhere with, must be coated with an adhesive coating called primer or by a special plasma processing before they can exhibit satisfactory bonding strength.

Tape for fluoroplastic that does not require primer treatment

The FA/FB series of double-coated adhesive tapes for fluoroplastics uses a special adhesive to enable good bonding to fluoroplastics, which was previously considered impossible. Primer treatment, which improves bonding, is also unnecessary.
This revolutionary tape has higher adhesion not only to fluoroplastics but also to metals, glass, and polypropylene than conventional tapes, and can bond a number of materials that had been considered difficult to adhere to.
It can be used as a substrate material for high-frequency circuit boards for high-speed processing of the ever-increasing volume of information communication in the future, as well as for bonding coated parts and filters in smartphones, which are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and in industrial equipment and medical applications where sealing materials made from fluoroplastics are used, providing solutions in a variety of fields.

Fluorine-containing resins are key materials for 5G society, but tape does not adhere to them.

Fluorine-containing resins are polymers that contain fluorine atoms in their molecules and have a variety of excellent properties. Due to their unique properties, they are utilized from water-repellent coatings and non-stick coatings for frying pans. More recently, they are expected to be used as a substrate material for the rapid processing of large amounts of information communication in 5G and future 6G. However, fluorine-containing resins are chemically inert, making bonding with other materials extremely difficult.

Currently, fluorine-containing resins cannot exhibit satisfactory adhesive strength because their surfaces are not activated unless a primer or a plasma treatment are applied to them.

In addition, these methods require special coating equipment, making the process complicated, and changing the properties of the polymer.

A special adhesive inspired by adhesion mechanism in the natural world

In order to solve these social issues, Sekisui Chemical has developed products based on the concept of biomimetics, which utilizes the functions of "natural world" in "manufacturing".

In the natural world, mussels are known to adhere to a wide range of materials, including fluorine-containing resins, through their special foot. We has developed a special adhesive, taking a cue from this adhesion mechanism.

A technology enabling fluorine-containing resins to adhere strongly

This double-sided tape can adhere well to fluorine-containing resins by using a special adhesive. No special treatment is required to improve bonding, and it can be easily used by simple lamination.

It has higher adhesive strength not only to fluorine-containing resins but also to metals, glass, and polypropylene than conventional tapes.

Solving a number of social Issues

This technology will expand the application of fluorine-containing resins which is difficult to joint to other materials.

This product will make it possible to contribute to solve problems faced in a variety of fields. For example, it can be joint to fluorine-containing substrate materials for the rapid processing of large amounts of information communication, coated parts and filters in smartphones as well as gaskets for industrial machinery and medical applications.

Features

Adhesiveness

We found that our own compound in which polyphenol component, a secretion of common mussel, is incorporated in the molecular structure can adhere to fluorine. By producing tape by utilizing this technology in adhesives, it is possible to stick objects to fluorine resin and polyolefin resin to which it is said to be difficult to stick object.

Primer-less

By using adhesive tape we developed that enables the primer-less condition, it is possible to reduce manufacturing processes (primer application, drying process, etc.) and achieve further stable adhesiveness.

Performance comparison

By using the 50-μm thick adhesive tape we developed and our acryl-based adhesive tape, we measured the peel adhesion at 180° of various adherends. The adhesive tape we developed exhibited favorable adhesion on various adherends, making it possible to strongly stick to PTFE (fluorine resin) and polyolefin resin. In particular, to fluorine resin, adhesive tape exhibited adhesivion stronger by about 10 times than that of ordinary acryl-based adhesive tape, indicating that the attempt to significantly improve the adhesiveness has succeeded.
